Burgos celebrated it 259th anniversary in February 2008. The community enjoys a good party with several regional celebrations throughout the year. The Plaza serves as host to most of the fiestas, which at times lour venders of all types and carnival games. Many Texas license plates can be seen in town on a given weekend due to a wedding or quincinera which are usually followed by a huge dinner and dance. Los Chorros is a favorite place on a hot day, temperatures easily reach into the high 110’s during summer months. The swimming hole is an attraction to mission trip visitors as well. Due to the heat, many families are in the house in the afternoon hours, but there is plenty of opportunity for good conversation in the evening. The people here enjoy sitting outside, taking in the usual evening breeze, and conversing with neighbors. It is not uncommon to have an unexpected guest stop by for a cup of coffee or even dinner. The people are very hospitable and their “doors are always open.” Open-air restaurants are a favorite on the weekends. Dinner is served at any time but the norm is 8:30 or later. Home cooked meals are worth the trip to Burgos. Rice and beans, cabrito, and barbocoa along with homemade tortillas leave visitors to Burgos anxious to return. Families are very generous and it is considered insulting to refuse an offer to stay for dinner or a second plate. A normal Sunday night activity for youth is to dress up and take a “vuelta” around the plaza. In some forms it is similar to American teenagers going to the mall to hang out or meet someone. There are not a lot of options for entertainment as one might be accustomed to in the States. Burgos Missions is working to develop youth programs and family events to offer activities to students who might otherwise look for trouble. One successful attempt has been monthly movie nights which are held outdoors on a giant screen. |
